TEACH!

TEACH! stands for The Educators At Chen Su Lan Home.

Situated at 202 Serangoon Garden Way, Chen Su Lan Methodist Children's Home houses children around the age of 5 to 16 years old. The Home's mission is to provide care and welfare to disadvantaged children, especially those who have special needs or face guardianship issues. The Home takes in beneficiaries regardless of background, race or religion.

what we do

TEACH! is a one to one tutoring programme that takes place every week. Our volunteers head down to the children's home for tutoring sessions and befriend the children.Besides regular sessions, we also organise special events for the children, such as Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year celebrations. These special events provide opportunities for the children to gain knowledge through fun and games, as well as for them to get to know their volunteers outside of the usual weekly tutoring.

HEAR FROM OUR VOLUNTEERS

TEACH! has definitely helped me to develop my communication skills. At the start, my kid was still unfamiliar with me and therefore not as receptive, but as I tried ways and means to get closer to my kid, a bond was developed over time. The student that I was attached to began to warm up to me and became used to my presence weekly, which made every session more engaging and more meaningful. TEACH! sessions have become something that I look forward to every week now!

- Zong Hui, Chairperson (External)
I have been involved in the community service sector for about 3 years now, having interacted with both youths and the elderly, and this has cultivated my patience and experience when dealing with the children at CSL. However, I have an introverted personality and it takes time for me to warm up and speak up to others, which therefore becomes a barrier especially when the nature of our work requires close interactions with others. That being said, working with the same child every week has allowed me to slowly warm up to my kid, which made sessions more enjoyable!

- Megan, Volunteer
Having been involved in the children and youth sector for a few years now, I am well-versed in the content covered for Mathematics and Chinese. This definitely helped in making the sessions with my kids more effective and fruitful. On the other hand, my main weakness is impatience, especially when my kids become restless sometime into the session. However, I have grown to become more patient and able to tackle such situations, where I will slowly coax them to do their work and we will play after they get their work done. It has been a truly heartwarming experience to be able to engage and connect with these beneficiaries.
